How do you use a Mala?


To use a mala necklace for meditation, follow these steps:

  • Choose a comfortable seated position and hold the mala in your right hand, draping it over your middle finger with the guru bead (largest bead at the bottom) resting on your middle finger.
  • Use your thumb to move to the first bead (the bead next to the guru bead) and recite your chosen mantra or prayer.
  • With each recitation, move to the next bead by pulling the mala towards you with your middle finger and releasing it with your thumb.
  • Continue reciting and moving through each bead until you reach the guru bead again.
  • When you reach the guru bead, you can either end your meditation or reverse direction and start again in the opposite direction.

When you are finished, hold the guru bead in your fingers as a reminder of the intention you set for your meditation practice.

Remember to breathe deeply and focus your attention on the mantra or prayer as you move through the beads. The mala can serve as a helpful tool for keeping your mind focused and centered during your meditation practice.
