What is a Mala?

A mala necklace is a traditional string of beads used in meditation practices in Hinduism and Buddhism. The word "mala" means "garland" in Sanskrit, and the necklace is typically made up of 108 beads, although some malas may have fewer beads.

The beads are usually made from natural materials such as wood, seeds, or gemstones, and are often strung together with a knot between each bead. At the bottom of the mala, there is usually a larger bead and a tassel, which represents the end of the meditation cycle.

During meditation, the practitioner holds the mala in their hands and uses their fingers to move from one bead to the next, reciting a mantra or prayer with each bead. The practice of using a mala is said to help calm the mind, focus the attention, and promote spiritual growth.
